Measuring and tracking: scales, labels and records

Measuring and record-keeping: 0.001 g milligram scales, a pH meter that reads to two decimals, magnifiers and a desk lamp for syringe lines, waterproof labels and label printers, log books and timers, and the tapes, scales and home tests people track over months. It is about two kinds of accuracy: getting a number right when you take it, and still having it in a month.

For measuring, resolution is the specification that matters. A 0.001 g pocket scale reads milligrams; a 1 g kitchen scale cannot, however good it looks. A pH meter gives a number to two decimals where strips give a colour and a guess. A magnifier clip or a lighted magnifier and a bright desk lamp belong here too, because half of "I can't read the lines" is the light rather than the eyes. A micro-spatula set is the part people forget: a milligram scale is only as accurate as whatever carries the powder onto it.

For records, the cheapest thing here is a waterproof blank label with the date and the volume written on it, and it answers more future questions than anything else here. A laminated-tape label printer survives fridge condensation where a handwritten label on a curved 3 mL vial does not. Beyond that: a paper log book, a reminder timer that shows how long since the last press, a magnetic planner on the fridge door where the vials already are, and a skin marker for rotating sites without a chart on the wall. The body-measurement and home-test items — tapes, scales, calipers, a blood-pressure cuff, an HbA1c kit — are here because they are what people actually track over months. Read their own instructions, and see the blood-tests guide before buying one.

What differs between listings

  • Resolution is the smallest step it can show. A 0.001 g scale reads milligrams; a 0.1 g kitchen scale cannot.
  • Resolution: the smallest step the instrument can actually show.
  • Whether it records for you — to an app, or to a memory you can read back — or leaves the writing down to you.
