Why Your Mini Fridge Isn't as Cold as the Dial Says
The dial is a power setting, not a temperature. How to find out what your mini fridge really does, and what the numbers mean.

The dial on a mini fridge is a power setting, not a temperature. Most small desktop fridges are thermoelectric: they pump a fixed amount of heat out, which cools the inside to a certain number of degrees below the room, usually 15–20. In a 22 °C room that is around 4–7 °C. In a 28 °C room it is 8–13 °C, outside the range, whatever the dial says.
How to find out what yours does
- Put a min/max thermometer inside, in the catalogue where the vials sit, not on the door.
- Leave it closed for 24 hours, then read the maximum and minimum.
- Repeat on the warmest day you expect. That is your real range.
What the numbers mean
- Max under 8 °C, min above 2 °C: it works in this room. Keep the thermometer in.
- Max over 8 °C: it cannot hold the range here. Move it to a cooler room, or use the kitchen fridge with a bin on the middle shelf; the comparison is honest about which is better.
- Min below 2 °C, or 0 °C: the back wall is freezing things. Move vials forward, or to a bin that keeps them off the wall.
Compressor fridges are different
A compressor fridge (the kind with a hum and a slightly higher price) sets and holds a temperature like a kitchen fridge, regardless of the room. If a mini fridge is the only option, that is the type to buy; the storage finder filters by cooling method.
