Sterile technique at home

Sterile technique at home is a short list of habits. Here they are, and what to do when you break one.

"Sterile technique" sounds like a hospital thing, but at home it comes down to a short list of habits. The principle underneath all of them: anything that ends up inside a vial or under skin should only ever touch things that are clean.

  1. Hands first. Soap and water for twenty seconds, or alcohol gel if there's no sink. Do this before you lay anything out, not after.
  2. Clear the surface and wipe it. A wiped table or a fresh disposable prep mat beats a crowded worktop. Food, pets and phones off it.
  3. Open packaging at the last moment. A syringe sitting unwrapped and "ready" for ten minutes has been collecting whatever is in the air.
  4. Swab, then wait. Wipe the stopper with a fresh alcohol pad and let it air-dry for a few seconds. Alcohol does its work as it dries, and wet alcohol carried in on a needle is what stings.
  5. Never touch the business end. Not the needle, not the syringe tip, not the part of the stopper you just cleaned. If you do, that item is finished — start again with a fresh one.
  6. One needle, one use. Needles blunt on the first pass, so a reused one hurts more and is dirtier. This is the rule people break most and regret most.
  7. A fresh pad per surface. One for the water stopper, another for the vial. Reusing a pad just moves things around.
  8. Finish the way you started. Sharps into the container immediately, rubbish away, surface wiped.

If you drop something, if a cap comes off inside a bag, or if you simply can't remember whether a stopper was swabbed — bin it and use a new one. Consumables are cheap compared with the alternative.
